Messier 51, also known as the Whirlpool Galaxy, is one of the most well known spiral galaxies in the night sky. It is located in the constellation Canes Venatici, at a distance of about 23 million light-years from our Earth. The galaxy also catalogued as NGC 5194, is interacting gravitationally with its smaller companion NGC 5195. This interaction is responsible for the pronounced and beautifully defined spiral arms that make M51 such a popular target for astrophotography.
This photo is the result of 53 hours and 54 minutes of exposure time, spread over many nights. Thanks to this extensive integration time, much more than just the galaxy pair became visible. Enormous faint tidal streams extend far beyond both galaxies, formed by their ongoing interaction over millions of years. The photo also reveals the Integrated Flux Nebula, extremely faint interstellar dust in our own Milky Way that is illuminated by the combined light of all the stars. Even the tiny orange dots in the background are special, because many of them are galaxies that are billions of light-years away.
To ensure the high quality prints perfectly match the digital photo, I produced multiple prototypes using different types of photo paper and materials, and carefully refined the results. The final result is the best possible balance between detail, contrast and print quality.
Each print is produced in high quality on Fujifilm Glossy photo paper.
The photo itself was captured using my Askar 103APO telescope and ZWO ASI294MC PRO cooled deep-sky camera, a combination that delivers incredible detail and amazing looking stars.
