The NGC/IC & Sharpless catalogs

The Caldwell Catalog (C)

Objects captured: 12/109

Current total integration time: XXX hours

As NASA nicely summerizes on its Hubble Caldwell Catalog page:
”The Caldwell Catalog goes beyond the work of Charles Messier, offering backyard astronomers more comic wonders to explore.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself, but I certainly explain a bit more about how this catalog came to be!

Sir Patrick Moore (1923 - 2012) was a well known astronomer and a strong advocate for amateur astronomy, he published his Caldwell Catalog back in 1995. It contains 109 deep sky objects chosen specifically to expand on the Messier list. While Charles Messier focused on identifying objects that could be mistaken for comets, Moore’s goal was to highlight important and diverse deep-sky objects, including one of my favorite targets the Eastern Veil Nebula (C33).

I plan to capture the Nothern Hemisphere objects form the Caldwell Catalog after I finish photographing the entire messier Catalog. Just as the Messier objects continue to inspire my astrophotography journey and fuel my passion for learning more about astronomy, I look forward to exploring the Caldwell objects as the next major milestone in my hobby.

P.S. this page is still a work in progress, some of the images don’t have a description yet, but I am working on it!
